چکیده

Autoregulation of cerebral circulation is the mechanism by which the cerebral blood flow (CBF) is maintained constant between large limits of arterial pressure. Autoregulation appears only between certain pressure limits. The specialized literature presents 2 possible mechanisms of autoregulation: myogenic reaction and metabolic regulation. Sympathetic nervous system stimulation and the antagonism of reninangiotensin system modulate CBF autoregulation, switching the curve to higher or smaller values of arterial pressure. Cerebral autoregulation is dependent on intracranial pressure as well on venous pressure. This paper is a review of the main mechanisms involved in cerebral autoregulation, its limits in hypertension, of the morphological changes in cerebral arteries and its assessment.

Autonomic function and cerebral autoregulation in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the first-line treatment in severe carotid stenosis to prevent stroke. Because of methodological limitations, the acute impact of CEA on baroreflex function and cerebral autoregulation is not well defined and was therefore investigated by applying a novel algorithm. METHODS AND RESULTS Systemic arterial blood pressure, ECG and respiration during metr...

Why is the neural control of cerebral autoregulation so controversial?

Cerebral autoregulation refers to the mechanisms that act to keep cerebral blood flow (CBF) constant during changes in blood pressure. The mechanisms of cerebral autoregulation, especially in humans, are poorly understood but are undoubtedly multifactorial and likely reflect many redundant pathways that potentially differ between species. Whether sympathetic nervous activity influences CBF and/...

Cerebellar autoregulation dynamics in humans.

Knowledge on autoregulation of cerebellar blood flow in humans is scarce. This study investigated whether cerebellar autoregulation dynamics and CO(2) reactivity differ from those of the supratentorial circulation. In 56 healthy young adults, transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitoring of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) and, simultaneously, of the contralateral middle cerebral artery ...

Lower limit of cerebral blood flow autoregulation in experimental renovascular hypertension in the baboon.

The effect of chronic renovascular hypertension on the autoregulation of cerebral blood flow was studied in anesthetized baboons. Cerebral blood flow was measured by the intracarotid 133Xe clearance method. Six baboons with renal hypertension of 8-12 weeks' duration were compared with six normotensive controls. The lower limit of autoregulation was determined following controlled hemorrhage. In...

Interaction among autoregulation, CO2 reactivity, and intracranial pressure: a mathematical model.

The relationships among cerebral blood flow, cerebral blood volume, intracranial pressure (ICP), and the action of cerebrovascular regulatory mechanisms (autoregulation and CO2 reactivity) were investigated by means of a mathematical model. The model incorporates the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation, the intracranial pressure-volume relationship, and cerebral hemodynamics. The latter is ba...
